Syngonium Care in Phoenix: How to Keep Your Arrowhead Plant Thriving

Syngoniums, commonly called Arrowhead Plants, are vibrant, easy-growing tropicals known for their arrow-shaped leaves and wide variety of colors—from classic green to pink, white, and variegated forms. They’re adaptable and beginner-friendly, making them perfect for Phoenix homes that need something hardy but eye-catching.

Light

Syngoniums prefer bright, indirect light. They’ll tolerate medium light, but low light causes slower growth and faded color. Too much direct sun—especially through a west or south window in Phoenix—can scorch their thin leaves.

Ideal spots:

  • A few feet back from a bright window with filtered light

  • Near reflective light walls or under a sheer curtain

  • Under an indoor grow light during the summer heat

Rotate the pot every few weeks to promote even, balanced growth.

Watering

Syngoniums like lightly moist soil, but not soggy conditions. In smaller nursery pots, they dry out faster in our dry desert air.

Phoenix watering schedule:

  • Spring & Summer: Water about every 5–7 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.

  • Fall & Winter: Water every 7–10 days, adjusting based on light and temperature.

Always water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom, and never leave standing water in the saucer.

If the plant’s leaves start to droop slightly, that’s a gentle sign it’s ready for water.

Soil & Repotting

Use a well-draining indoor mix—potting soil blended with perlite and orchid bark works best. Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots start circling the pot.

At Maricopa Botanicals, we offer repotting services and can help refresh your soil or move your Syngonium into one of our handmade concrete pots that breathe and drain well in the Phoenix climate.

Humidity & Temperature

Syngoniums appreciate moderate humidity and do well at typical indoor temps between 65–85°F. They’ll adapt to Phoenix’s dry air, but misting or grouping them with other plants helps keep leaves lush. Avoid cold drafts or direct air from vents.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly in spring and summer with our Maricopa Botanicals house-made liquid fertilizer to encourage new growth and vibrant foliage. Hold off fertilizing in winter when growth slows.

Pruning & Propagation

Trim vines regularly to keep a fuller shape and encourage branching. Pruned cuttings can easily be propagated:

  1. Cut below a node.

  2. Root the cutting in water or moist soil.

  3. Pot once roots reach a few inches long.

If you’d like help, Maricopa Botanicals offers propagation services for your Syngonium or any tropical plant.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage

  • Crispy edges: Low humidity or underwatering

  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light

Wipe dust from leaves using our house-made leaf cleaner to restore shine and improve light absorption.

Final Thoughts

Syngoniums are easy, rewarding plants that thrive in bright, indirect light and consistent watering. Their lush foliage and colorful varieties make them perfect for Phoenix homes looking for low-stress tropical beauty.
